NYSS purses to rise

Purse estimates for the New York Sire Stakes program have been announced by the Harness Horse Breeders of New York State to reach $8.5 million in 2005. Purses of $7.6 million were distributed in 2004, representing a significant increase for next year.

"Despite a number of uncertainties in New York State, which everyone recognizes, the New York Sire Stakes program is still alive and well with $8.5 million in estimated purses for next year," said Robert A. Brooks, executive director of Harness Horse Breeders. "The New York Sire Stakes program remains one of the best state-bred programs in the country."

The Sire Stakes program format for 2005 remains unchanged with five preliminary legs for 3 year olds and four preliminary legs for 2 year olds. There will again be $150,000 finals for the top performers in each of eight divisions. Likewise, the late-closer program will have four legs and $20,000 finals for 2 and 3 year olds, as in the past.

In addition, Harness Horse Breeders is working on plans to expand the State Fair Meet at the Syracuse Mile to six racing days during two weekends in August 2005. In 2004 the three-day meet was held during a single weekend.
