Renovations continue at Yonkers Raceway, including work that began this week on the half-mile racetrack. Horses stabled on the grounds are continuing to train in the early morning, but then Charles E. Coon & Son take over as they prepare the track for the resumption of live racing in the coming weeks.
Yonkers has not raced since last June, but plans call for the New York site to reopen in late September. More than 400 workers are on site daily, with 2,000 video lottery terminals already in place. The entire project is expected to top $500 million.
