While trainer Tony Alagna is keeping Captaintreacherous home and skipping the Little Brown Jug, he still may have three entries in Emeritus Maximus, Wake Up Peter and Odds On Equuleus, the latter only entering his barn two weeks ago. The latter two raced in a qualifier on Thursday, Sept. 12, at The Red Mile, with Odds On Equuleus—with Alagna driving-romping to a 33-length win in 1:50.1. Wake Up Peter had sat second to his pacesetting stablemate through three-quarters but then suddenly went offstride.
Driver Mike Lachance said afterward he didn't have any explanation for Wake Up Peter's stretch mistake. Alagna said he expects to enter both Wake Up Peter and Emeritus Maximus to the Jug, and said a decision on Odds On Equuleus—who has been battling sickness—will be made after he talks to trainer Robin Schadt, who sent the pacer to him after he had gone winless in eight starts this year.--By Gordon Waterstone
