Offshore Dream wins second straight Prix d'Amerique

Offshore Dream has captured his second straight Prix d’Amerique, scoring  by 1 1/2 lengths over Opal Viking in a mile rate of 1:55.4 over the 2,700 meter course at the Vincennes racetrack in Paris, France, Sunday.

The race started with Opal Viking, Super Light and Going Kronos each taking turns on the lead in the early going. The first to attack from the back was Meaulnes du Corta, who took the lead about a third of the way through the race.

Pierre Levesque then brought Offshore Dream up first-over but his position was soon replaced by the mare Orla Fun.

For a while it looked as if Offshore Dream would be locked in  second-over as other horses came three wide.  But as the field neared the head of the home stretch Levesque was able to get the 6-year-old son of Reve d'Udon out and he began using his great speed to chase down Meaulnes Du Corta.

It appeared Offshore Dream was on his way to victory and it was insured when Meaulnes Du Corta broke stride in the stretch and was automatically disqualified. But Offshore Dream still swept under the wire first, defeating Opal Viking, with the Oral Fun finishing third.

Levesque also trains Offshore Dream (as well as Meaulnes Du Corta), who is a homebred owned by Ecurie de Rougemont.

"It was one of the more beautiful races that you would ever want to see,” said Mike Lachance, who drove in a race later in the Vincennes program. “The action at the start with the three made even more action in the race. It looked like the best horse won the race. But even if you’re the best horse you need a lot of luck, that nothing goes wrong. So, that was wonderful.”

The purse for the Prix d’Amerique was one million Euros or approximately $1.479 million.
