Ohio bars also want slots

If the Ohio legislature approves slot machines at the state's seven racetracks, Ohio bars feel that they should share in the action. Phil Craig, executive director of the Ohio Licensed Beverage Assn., said that bars proved that they can regulate gaming when they installed Keno machines in their facilities last summer. Tracks also began offering Keno in August.

The Ohio State Racing Commission unveiled a proposal last month to establish slots at the state's seven tracks, and its executive director Sam Zonak said no to the idea of branching out to liquor establishments.

"There is no way you could offer addiction control and proper policing by having it [slots] spread out in so many places, whereas our plan is contained at just seven locations," Zonak is quoted as saying in today's Columbus Dispatch.

A separate effort to put casinos in the state's four largest cities without any expanded gaming at tracks is intended for the statewide ballot in November.

The horse racing industry in Ohio is seeking legislative support for the plan to put slot machines at the tracks.
