John S. Mitchell, DVM, a native of Cadiz, Ohio, and a Standardbred racetrack practitioner in Pompano Beach, Fla., has joined the American Association of Equine Practitioner (AAEP) Executive Committee as vice president. Mitchell was sworn in at the 55th annual AAEP convention, held in in Las Vegas in early December. With this appointment, he will serve as AAEP president in 2012.
After retiring from private practice in 1995, Dr. Mitchell returned to the profession as a part-time racetrack practitioner at Pompano Park Race Track in 2002. He specializes in performance exams, diagnostic procedures and the economic investments of clients. He was the owner of Equine Associates in Boca Raton, Fla., from 1975 to 1995.
An AAEP member since 1972, Dr. Mitchell has served on the Educational Programs, Racing, Practice Management and Foundation Advisory committees. He served as AAEP treasurer from 2002-2005.
Dr. Mitchell has written several articles and made presentations on financial planning and practice management. He has been instrumental in development of programs for the annual AAEP Practice Management Seminars and co-chaired the seminar in 2002. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Florida Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Mitchell gained an interest in veterinary medicine growing up next door to a small-town veterinarian. At age three he started riding with the veterinarian on farm calls. His father, a banker, and another childhood mentor, an investment lawyer, sparked his interest in finances. After graduating from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972, Dr. Mitchell completed an internship at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Mitchell has two sons, Kyle and Todd, and welcomed a grandson in 2009. Dr. Mitchell and his wife Melodie enjoy family, traveling and photography. Dr. Mitchell also spends his leisure time fishing. (AAEP)
