Ohio's Earl Bowman dies

Return Home
March 20, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Noted Ohio horseman Earl Bowman, who raced such notables as Bang The Door, Slam The Door and Ruff Door in Ohio, died Saturday just a few days short of his 81st birthday.

For many years Bowman trained almost exclusively for Elbridge Moxley. One of the products of their relationship was the fine mare Jane Brewer p, 2:062h, who made her mark as a broodmare. She produced 17 foals, all of which made it to the races and 16 of which took taking records.

Four of Jane Brewer's foals, About Time, All Time, Arrival Time, and Another Time, all won on one afternoon at Lexington, Ky., in under 2:00.

Bowman's personal favorite was About Time, who earned $160,540 racing from age two through 14 and who capped his racing career with a victory in a retirement pace at Windsor Raceway. A bit of a rogue, she bit off part of Bowman's finger.

Oriental Doll was another strong performer who traced back to Jane Brewer. Having earned more than $150,000, she won a New York Sire Stakes final at Roosevelt Raceway in 1987.

Another notable in the Bowman Stable was Cervantes Osborne, who was owned by Ohio's Jerome Osborne, another longtime patron of Bowman's. Jack Silvers of California, E.T. Boulding of Shaker Heights, Ohio, James Ramagli of Lakewood, Ohio and Vito Arsena, another Ohioan, also had horses with Bowman for many years.

Awalkinthepark, Bang The Door, Out The Door, ET's Camille, Sweet Potato Chips, Slam The Door, Ruff Door, Three Potato, were among the many fine horses that Bowman trained during his 50-year career.

Bowman is survived by his wife, JoAnn; a daughter, Diane; and he was predeceased by his son, Gary; and by two brothers, Gerald and Hilton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Medina-Portage-Summit, 1900 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44313-6927 or Medina United Methodist Church, 260 S. Court St., Medina, OH 44256.
