The Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association has announced that because the state of Ohio is currently operating with an interim budget, purse money earned in the Ohio Sire Stakes cannot be distributed at this time.
Sire Stakes purse checks from July 3 at Northfield Park and July 4 at Scioto Downs probably won't be distributed until a state budget is adopted by the legislature. Entry fee money is being held by the racetracks, but the Sire Stakes monies which come from the Ohio Standardbred Development Fund are presently being held in the state's treasury.
"There is some concern about whether or not there will need to be a third interim budget, and whether or not the governor will shut down the state if a budget is not agreed upon," said Jerry Knappenberger, general manager of the Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association (OHHA). "The state is presently operating under the second interim budget which expires at midnight on July 14."
In addition, the Ohio race tracks have not received the "Ohio Combined Dark Time" purse pool checks for May at this time. The OHHA said it is unclear when these checks, that go into the horsemen’s purse pool at all tracks, will be released.
