Virginia-bred trotters will take center stage Tuesday at Colonial Downs when a field of eight, including four Virginia-bred champions, dispute the $22,700 Virginia Breeders Aged Trot. I’m A Cool Breeze is the 2-1 morning line favorite off a gritty half-length victory in 1:56 last Monday at Colonial Downs. The 6-year-old Ens Talisman gelding has racked up nine wins at the one-turn mile for owners Julianne Bobby and Scott Woogen and trainer Anthony Sapienza. I’m A Cool Breeze will leave from post seven under the direction of Jim Marohn Jr. Royal Photo, the Virginia-bred champion 2 year old in 2000, heads a two-horse entry from the Roland Dunavant Jr. barn. Royal Photo has enjoyed a renaissance this fall at age nine, returning from a year-long absence to notch two wins and a second from four starts, including a new lifetime mark of 1:55.4 most recently.
The SJ’s Photo gelding joins stablemate Dusty Winner as the 3-1 second choice on the morning line. Dusty Winner started the meet on a good note, notching a division of the first leg of the Todd Parker Memorial late closing series but the 4-year-old Credit Winner gelding has been plagued with breaking problems since.
The 2001 champion 3-year-old Cum On Windswept is the field’s leading earner with $246,966 in the bank. The 9-year-old Cumin horse is winless in 2007 but has earned $19,295 while facing tough competition all season. Cum On Windswept also has the field’s best lifetime mark, a 1:54.1 clocking earned last fall at Colonial. Cum On Windswept is joined by Mr. Beau Windswept in a John F. Swart Jr.-owned entry. Royal Photo and Cum On Windswept are joined by fellow former Virginia-bred Champions Color Schemes and Sperry Creek Flash. Color Schemes took the 3-year-old filly trot title last year and Sperry Creek Flash took 3-year-old trotting honors in 2002. The Virginia Breeders Aged Trot goes as the third of 12 races Tuesday at Colonial. First post is 5 p.m. eastern. (Colonial Downs)
