Southwind Tempo, fresh off her world-record performance in the Lynch final, posted her sixth straight win in the the third of three Lady Catskill eliminations at Monticello Raceway Wednesday afternoon, while Omen Hanover set a new local standard for 3-year-old filly pacers in the first split. Those two winners sandwiched a strong effort by Bolero Tallia that stretched her unbeaten streak in 2007 to four.
Omen Hanover overcame a first-over trip from driver Daniel Dube to win the first $20,000 elim in 1:53.2, the fastest mile ever by a sophomore filly pacer at the Mighty M. Trinity Islands was second with JK Pure Earl third.
A daughter of Western Hanover out of Oohs 'N Aah's, the career-best win was the first of the year for Omen Hanover in five starts. Doug Miller trains for owners North Woodland Stables and Trond Willy Wilhelmsen.
Bolero Tallia, a daughter of Art's Conquest out of the $500,000-winning mare Bolero Takara, scored a career-best 1:53.4 victory in the second elim. Dube was in the bike behind the Daniel Martin trainee owned by Yves Sarrazin. Pop Diva was second with Tidewaterdragonfly also earning a spot in next week's rich Lady Catskill final.
Southwind Tempo was sent off the 1-9 choice in the third elim off that 1:49.3 Lynch victory at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, and although it wasn't easy early, she was impressive to the wire. Driver Tim Tetrick sent Southwind Tempo forward out of the gate but driver Yannick Gingras was determined to try and take some sting out of her by urging the rail-leaving Western Graduate hard around the first turn.
Southwind Tempo finally cleared to the top but the opening quarter was reached in a sizzling :26.4. From there the daughter of Bettor's Delight out of Tsunami Hanover posted fractions of :57.1 and 1:25.4 en route to the 1:53.3 victory, holding off Western Graduate down the stretch. Mind Boggling rallied late to take third-place honors.
Southwind Tempo has now won eight of her nine starts this year, earning more than $354,000. Steve Elliott trains for owner Toby Lynch and Wayne Chrebet.
