One More Laugh turned in one heck of a performance to win the $500,000 Governor’s Cup Sunday afternoon at Harrah’s Chester, using a first-over assault to win by one length over Rock N Roll Heaven in 1:49.2, a world record clocking for a 2-year-old colt or gelding on a five-eighths mile track.
Malicious started from the rail and held his position, leading the field to the quarter in :26.4 while Rock N Roll Heaven took the two hole and Tim Tetrick settled One More Laugh fifth. But in front of the grandstand, as the pace slowed (the second panel was in :29), Tetrick pulled and was first-over when Malicious broke the beam at the half in :55.4.
Driver David Miller kept One More Laugh parked out to the three quarters in 1:22.3, but before they hit the straightaway, One More Laugh had surged to the front. In the homestretch One More Laugh kept Rock N Roll Heaven at bay to win for the seventh time in his eight career starts.
One More Laugh is owned by Mathias Meinzinger, Jerry Silva and trainer Ray Schnittker. Meinzinger also bred the gelded son of McArdle.
The $500,000 Three Diamonds final, held two races earlier on the card, was won by betting favorite Fancy Filly, who scored by 1 ¾ lengths in 1:51.1. George Teague Jr. trains the filly and owns her in partnership with Ted Gewertz and Only Money Inc. Fancy Filly, a daughter of Western Hanover, has now won eight of nine starts this year and banked almost $500,000.
