Pancleefandarpels and B Strike Three had their names in lights Friday night, winning Yonkers Raceway's co-featured $31,000 Open Handicaps. In the weekly distaff derby, "Pancleef" was ordered outside of her six rivals (Riven Hanover was a judges' scratch). She and driver Jason Bartlett (four wins on the 11-race card) were content to enjoy the view from the back of the bus as JK Pure Pearl (Pat Lachance) worked around Nip N Attack (Cat Manzi). JK Pearl led through first-half fractions of :28.1 and :58.4 before Binions (Greg Grismore) led the bevy of back markers. Binions found her way past the leader before the 1:27.4 three-quarters, but company was coming. Symphony In Motion (Brent Holland), last week's victress and this week's 13-10 choice, moved for the lead...temporarily. Pancleefandarpels was lurking and lunging, getting the line by a half-length in 1:56.4. Binions saved the bottom of the ticket, with Brickyard Trouble (Ray Baynes) and JK Pure Pearl earning the small change. For Pancleefandarpels, a 5-year-old daughter of Noble Ability owned by Peter Pan Stables and trained by Erv Miller, she returned $10.20 (third choice) for her first win in two '09 tries.
The week's marquee trot found B Strike Three (Larry Stalbaum), with consecutive $300,000-plus seasons to his credit, making quite an impression in his local debut.
American Lane (Manzi) two-moved to the lead from his outside assignment, grabbing the big chair after a :28.4 opening quarter-mile. After a 60-second intermision, the interloper was on the move. B Strike Three, dismissed at 15-1 from post five, had found his way into an early three hole. He went up and over the track record-holder before a snappy :28.4 third quarter, then ran up the score. B Strike Three owned a 3 3/4-length lead turning for home before winning by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:57.4...a solid mile on a frigid night. American Lane saved second, with last week's Open Handicap winner Yankee Nola (Jim Pantaleano), 17-10 favorite Victor's Vicky (Bartlett) and Show Me the Monet (Stephane Bouchard) also making money. For B Strike Three, a 4-year-old son of Striking Sahbra trained by Bret Shultz for owner Ben Robards, he paid $33.40 (second-longest shot on board) for his first win in a couple of 2009 outings.
