Voelz Hanover turned in an eye-catching, 1:53.4 mile over a sloppy track in the fastest of three C$39,182 Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Series Eliminations for 2-year-old filly pacers on Friday night at Mohawk Racetrack. Over a Mohawk oval which was left rain-soaked after some heavy, early evening showers, the daughter of Astreos--Vassar Hanover took command on the way to a wicked :55.1 half, and then opened up an insurmountable lead over her rivals for driver Rick Zeron. She came home in :30 to hold off a hard-charging Gold Not Silver, with Lilbitfasternow picking up the show spot. It was the fifth win of the season in eight starts for Voelz Hanover who is also trained by Zeron for owner R. Berthiaume Inc. Of Montreal, Que. Chancey Lady was also a dominant winner in the second split for the lethal combination of driver Mark MacDonald and trainer Casie Coleman, as she scored by open lengths in 1:55.1. After making a quarter-pole move to the front, the daughter of Camluck--Art Of Design cruised to the win over U Make Me Laugh and Enniscrone. Chancey Lady now has three wins in four career starts for owner Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, B.C. Tonight’s first elimination, race two, just prior to the track being scraped, fell to the Quebec invader Style Semalu. Driver Mario Baillargeon was able to work out an inside trip with the daughter of Million Dollar Cam--Alcyon Semalu, and she surged through between rivals late for the narrow win, in 1:58, holding off Designated Leader and Envy. It was the third-straight win and fourth overall this season in seven starts for the Pierre Touchette trainee, who won for Semalu, Inc. and the Zoom and Fish Stable, Inc. of Laval, Que. The field for the C$130,000 Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Series Final, that will be raced next Friday night at Mohawk will include, in post position order, Voelz Hanover, Lilbitfasternow, Enniscrone, Shake That Junk, U Make Me Laugh, Designated Leader, Style Semalu, Envy, Chancey Lady, and Gold Not Silver.
