A post-10 starting spot was no obstacle for Bella Dolce who dominated her rivals in the $120,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold final for 3-year-old filly trotters Friday night (Aug. 8) at Mohawk Racetrack. The 1:56 victory ran her current unbeaten streak to four and sent her career earnings to $480,818. She returned $3.50 for the win.
With Paul MacDonell at the controls, the daughter of Kadabra - Pizza Dolce floated out for early position and settled in fifth as Benediction Lindy put up a quick opening fraction of 27 seconds. As the field raced past the :56.3 half, MacDonell tipped his charge to the outside and started an uncovered bid She reached the lead before the third panel in 1:26.
After easily swallowing up the pacesetter, Bella Dolce cruised to an open-length score with Pasadena Princess rallying for the place spot and Countess Stormont finishing third. "You can never be too certain how things will go when you have the 10 hole," said MacDonell. "Being the class filly she is, she overcomes most obstacles and tonight she did. She seems to like coming from off the pace and chasing horses. She's fresh right now and feeling good. I like the way she's trotting. If we can keep her healthy and on track, she should finish up the season strong." Bella Dolce is now four-for-nine on the season for trainer Kevin O'Reilly and owner David McDuffee of Nashua, New Hampshire. Earlier in the night, Hamster Dance, driven by Jody Jamieson, captured the $20,000 OSS Consolation in 1:57.3, turning back Gaelic Mistress and Abby Kadabra. (WEG)
