PA Ag chief buys mare

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Dennis C. Wolff became the newest Standardbred owner Thursday when he bought the broodmare Yankee Dallas for $22,000.

The mare by Balanced Image is in foal to 2004 Trotter of the Year Windsong's Legacy. She was consigned by Hempt Farms and was knocked down for the $22,000 price to Dr. Paul F. Spears, one of the breeders of Windsong's Legacy.

Secretary Wolff, taking a tour of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on Thursday where the Standardbred Horse Sale is taking place, happened to be passing by the Hempt stabling area as Dr. Spears won the bidding for the horse, and Wolff and Spears began a conversation about why Spears bought the mare. Spears discussed the pedigree of the horse–Yankee Dallas's dam, Dicey Yankee, produced the $260,000 multiple stakes winner Dedicated Yankee–and Wolff became more and more interested. Spears offered Wolff a partnership in the horse, but Wolff decided to buy the horse outright. (Wolff later said that he may take on partners in the mare.)

Wolff, a world-renowned dairy farmer, plans to take the horse to his Columbia County, Pennsylvania, farm to house the mare and eventually raise the foal. Wolff cannot race any horses in Pennsylvania under state statute, but ownership in breeding stock is permitted.
