Pablo Angus and J K Pure Pearl divided Yonkers Raceway Friday honors, winning their respective $31,000 Open Handicaps.
Pablo Angus, the scourge of the
upstate ranks, earned his first local victory by getting involved early
in the weekly trotting feature.
With
Dan Cappello, Jr. driving for trainer Bert Belanger, "Pablo" -- as the
3-2 choice of the electorate -- made an immediate lead from post
position five (in one notch as Force Nine was a defection due to
injury).
Meadowview Matty (Pat Lachance)
claimed the control bar, getting a :28.4 opening quarter-mile and
1:00.3 intermission. Indiana Hall (Jeff Gregory), who had left into a
three hole, tried a second move with Rapid Strategy (Jordan Stratton)
along for the tow.
"Matty" found a 1:29.3
three-quarters, taking a tenuous lead into the lead. Meanwhille, Pablo
Angus was all dressed up, awaiting some place to go. He ducked inside
and the issue was over. Pablo Angus took the short way home, widening
to two lengths, in 1:59.2.
Rapid Strategy grabbed second,
with Indiana Hall, Yankee Nola (Jim Pantaleano) and Meadowview Matty
completing the cashers. A J's Send Money (Jim Meittinis) and Med Vac
(Jason Bartlett) both misbehaved and were sent to their rooms without
supper.
Pablo Angus, a 7-year-old Fortune
Winner gelding leased by Lyse Belanger, paid $5.00 for his first board
placing in three '09 tries. The Exacta paid $56.50, with the Triple
worth $182.00.
J K Pure Pearl went the distaff derby distance in 1:55.4.
With Bartlett driving for trainer
Linda Toscano, J K Pure Pearl, leaving from post three, stepped around
the pole-sitting Noble Descent (Jeff Gregory). She found intervals of
:28 and :58.2, before the 6-5 favorite, Sentbytheangels (Ryan
Anderson), moved from fourth.
The two raced as a team in and out
of the 1:27 three-quarters, with J K Pure Pearl grudgingly getting rid
of her first challenger.
Noble Descent angled out for the
drive, only to run out of racetrack. J K Pure Pearl won by a neck in
1:55.4. Binions (Greg Grismore), Saymynamesaymyname (Jordan Stratton)
and Blissful Maddie (Brent Holland) also made money, while
Sentbytheangels faded to sixth.
For J K Pure Pearl, a 5-year-old
daughter of Bettor's Delight co-owned by William Jacobowitz and the
Camelot and 3 Brothers Stables, she returned $7.00 as the second choice
for her first win in four season’s starts. The Exacta paid $38.60, with
the triple returning $89.50.(Yonkers)
