Pa. Budget impasse could shut casinos

July 08, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

According to reports, slots operations in Pennsylvania could be shutdown at midnight Sunday if state legislators don't agree on a budget and the state courts don't intervene. That's because as of Sunday, the legislature had failed to agree on a state budget. Just last July horse racing took a financial hit when the state of New Jersey failed to agree on a budget by July 1, and harness racing was shut down at the Meadowlands.

The Associated Press reported Sunday morning that Gov. Ed Rendell said he will decide Sunday afternoon whether an agreement is close enough that he can call off the furloughs.

Without a budget or Rendell's agreement that one is close, more than 24,000 state workers whose jobs are not deemed to be essential to health and safety will be furloughed without pay at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Also, the state's five slot-machine casinos went to Commonwealth Court on Friday to try to prevent being closed when Revenue Department workers are furloughed. In addition, the Associated Press reported that two Republican state senators asked the same court to enforce subpoenas issued to two of Rendell's aides seeking information about the casino shutdown.
