The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has approved the opening of the new $175 million, state-of-the-art Meadows Racetrack & Casino, after Monday's testing of casino operations. The 350,000-square-foot casino will open at 10 am Wednesday, April 15, following a brief ribbon cutting ceremony.
Thousands of invited guests helped test the casino Monday with proceeds benefitting area volunteer fire departments. In all, about $254,000 will be donated to the departments, according to initial estimates. The Meadows does not receive any revenue from testing.
One local newspaper's website carried a video of the opening, including a glimpse at the new slots area as well as sightlines of the racetrack. To see the video, click here.
Many guests invited to Monday's testing of the new casino couldn't make it to the facility because of traffic jams. Traffic backed up on the Racetrack Rd. exit from Interstate 79, forcing police to eventually close the exit.
"We can’t wait to open what will be one of the finest casinos on the East Coast and a premier entertainment destination,” said Bill Paulos, a principal with Las Vegas-based Cannery Casino Resorts (CCR), which owns The Meadows. “The testing went well, and we’re happy we can do something to help our volunteer firefighters who do so much for our communities.”
CCR is investing more than $450 million into the property. Integrating the long-standing tradition of harness racing at The Meadows with state-of-the-art gaming facilities, the casino will feature more than 3,700 slot machines, an electronic table-games pit, live entertainment, a new grandstand, VIP super boxes and a boutique-style bowling alley.
It also will provide three featured dining venues: a premier steak house, a specialty restaurant overlooking the racetrack and a diverse food court with micro-restaurants. A centrally located lounge and bar will feature panoramic views of both the gaming floor and the racetrack. (The Meadows)
