Palone Ranger surprises

November 25, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Palone Ranger took to the passing lane and blew past the pace setting Perfect Union and drew off to an easy 1:54.3 victory in the $546,830 Messenger Stakes, the third leg of the pacing Triple Crown at Yonkers Raceway Saturday night.

Perfect Union, with David Miller in the bike, shot into the lead at the start and set the pace with fractions of :28.1, :56.3 and 1:25.3. Breeders Crown champion Shark Gesture pulled from third nearing the half and began to mount a challenge when he had trouble in the turn and faded out of contention. The pocket-sitting Winslow Gamble pulled in the last turn, but couldn’t gain. That move allowed diver Ron Pierce to move Palone Ranger up behind the pacesetter and then into the passing lane and the brush to the wire.

The victory was the first of the year in nine starts for Palone Ranger, who is owned by the Four Friends Racing Stable and the Perretti Racing Stable and just recently joined the stable of trainer Greg Peck. A winner of $385,757 last year, he has career earnings of $722,333.
