Although his day started off on a sour note when the trotter he was directing in the first race at The Meadows Tuesday made a break as the 1-5 favorite, by day’s end Dave Palone had worn a path to the winner’s circle having won nine of his 13 drives on the 16-race program. Palone’s win binge temporarily placed him first in the 2008 North American dash standings with 174 wins, but a three-bagger for Tony Morgan at Dover Downs later on brought the Delaware-based driver to 175 victories. After the miscue in the opener, Palone captured the next four races, including a program-best 1:54 win with Eternal Revenue, a 4-year-old Artiscape gelding. Following the last of those four victories in the fifth race, Palone didn’t return to the winner’s circle until race 11, and followed that up with a victory in race 12. After sitting out the 13th race, Palone swept the final three races on the card. Palone, who earlier this year surpassed 12,000 career wins, won races for five different trainers, including hat tricks for Steve Bush and Mickey Burke. His other wins came for trainers Mark Christman, John Sokol and his brother, Mike Palone.
Palone has two prior 10-win cards at The Meadows on his resume. He accomplished the feat for the first time on Sept. 11, 1999, and then he did it again on July 6, 2002.
