John Campbell and Pampered Princess led virtually gate to wire to win the Del Miller Memorial Final at the Meadowlands Friday night in 1:53.2. The win, the fourth in a row for the Andover Hall three-year-old filly, makes her harness racing's newest millionaire.
Charging to the front from the gate, Pampered Princess relinquished the lead to Possess the Magic just before the :28.2 quarter, then took it back to lead the field to a :57.2 half. With a comfortable lead and never really challenged, she floated around the final turn 2 1/2 lengths in front, to a 1:25.4 third quarter. Possess the Magic's :27.1 final quarter couldn't quite make up enough ground as Pampered Princess won by a 1/2 length.
So will the filly take on the boys in the Hambletonian?
"It looks like we're going to race against the fillies," said Pampered Princess' trainer Jimmy Takter. "We haven't decided yet." Takter won last year's Del Miller Final with Passionate Glide, who then went on to win the Hambletonian Oaks.
"I hope she goes in the Oaks," said driver John Campbell. "It would make my job easier."
Pampered Princess won her Del Miller elimination on July 6 in 1:53.2 The other elimination heat winners finished third (Falls For You) and sixth (Granny Gui) in Friday's final.
