Pa. rejection reasons

The Pennsylvania State Harness Racing Commission has issued an 87-page report why it denied last week both Centaur and Bedford Downs' applications to build a new harness racetrack in the state.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stated the report revealed that the reason behind the rejection of Centaur's proposed Valley View Downs was because the site was too small and that it didn't like the track's design, including not having separate entrances for horsemen, spectators and vendors making deliveries.

The Post-Gazette said the report stated the commission was concerned about Bedford Downs financing and its owners' past connection to organized crime figures. Associated Press revealed that the alleged connection is a business relationship Bedford Downs chief Carmen Schick's grandfather, Carmen Ambrosia, had with Ohio mob boss Lenine "Lenny" Strollo. Strollo had reportedly turned state's evidence that helped convict Ohio U.S. Rep. James Traficant, who was expelled from Congress in 2002. The commission did not connect Schick with Strollo, but said his family continued to control companies that did business with him.
