One of the top overnight horses in two regions, the Precious Fella gelding Particular has died just days after his 25th birthday.

Particular, who campaigned part of his career in New England and competed at Foxboro Raceway, later became one of the top overnight pacers on the scene in South Florida at Pompano Park for trainer Peter Blood.

Born on May 20, 1982 at Hanover Shoe Farm in Hanover, Pa., Particular, a gelded son of Precious Fella out of the Strike Out mare Striking Byrd, campaigned nine years in the decade of the 1980s and the early 1990s against the top overnight pacers in the country.

Originally purchased by the ownership team of Blood, Roger Slobody and Gary Piontkowski, Particular also raced for a period of time for Michigan owners Robert Battiata and Marlene Hartung while his final owners were Blood and Greg Kline.

During a racing career that began in 1984 and continued into the next decade, Particular made 192 racing starts with 55 victories, 36 second-place finishes and 20 times in third place. He earned a total of $301,524 despite the fact that most of his earnings were in overnight events.

Particular’s two signature seasons came in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, Particular scored 15 victories in 40 starts and set a track record at Pompano for 4 year olds of 1:55.1 while earning $71,000.

The next season, Particular scored nine victories in 32 starts but scored his lifetime best of 1:53.4 while earning nearly $113,000.

For his career achievements, Particular was inducted into the New England Harness Racing Hall of Fame.
