Pa. slots change criticized

A story in Friday’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stated a vote earlier this week by the state House that would allow for the final racetrack/slots license to go to a non-racetrack casino instead of a harness track is being criticized by harness horsemen in Pennsylvania.

Five racetracks have received slot licenses with a sixth going toward a new Thoroughbred racetrack. The seventh license was earmarked for a new Standardbred racetrack in western Pennsylvania. The Senate has not yet voted on the change that will allow the license to be converted to a non-track site in July 2008.

"The loss of the fourth harness track would be a mortal blow to our progress in promoting the state's harness racing," Standardbred Breeders Association of Pennsylvania executive director Paul Spears told the Post-Gazette.
