Won The West was one of three Pennsylvania Sire Stake swinners for trainer Mickey Burke at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Tuesday afternoon. Won The West cashed in at 3-5 in 1:51.4. Greg Grismore did the driving as Won The West went all the way on the lead. The gelding is now two-for-two in Sires Stakes competition this year. Tutor Hanover finished second and Future Character was third.

Yannick Gingras drove both of Burke’s other winners, working out the pocket trip in each of those victories. He led May June Character to a win at 5-1 in one split. The gelding won for just the second time this year, scoring in 1:51.2. Ruff Me Up faltered late as the favorite, settling for second. Foiled Again picked up the show.

Then Gingras and Burke shocked the faithful with Literate Hanover, a 20-1 longshot who used the pocket trip and the passing lane to get up in 1:51.3. Big Business, last year’s 2-year-old Pennsylvania champ, just missed in second. Up Front Kyle set the pace, but settled for third.

Perhaps the day’s most impressive Sires Stake performance came courtesy of Springlake Artist. The colt from the barn of Robert Siegelman was moved first-over before the half and sustained his move all the way through the stretch to prevail in 1:51.2. Andy Miller did the driving aboard the 6-5 favorite. Western Artwork finished second and Pan Giovanni got third.

Rockinrollin Now also won a division, rallying from way back in the stretch as a 7-1 shot in 1:53.2. David Miller drove the gelding for the Ronald Potter barn. Dragon Master and Rusty’s Casino rounded out the top three.(Pocono Downs)
