Pat Ricketts, who raced such top horses as HA's Pet wth her husband R.D., died Wednesday, March 5, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 101. Pat and R.D. traveled to racetracks in the days of Scott Frost to Niatross, and lived in both Houston and Pompano Beach, Fla.
During the lifetime of her husband, who was known as Dick, the couple--both natives of Ohio--never missed a Little Brown Jug.
Pat and her husband were also known as quiet philanthropists, especially in Houston. She would search out worthy young boys and fund their educations, and many of them went on to successful careers in business, medicine, engineering and law.
HA's Pet was Pat's favorite racehorse, but the horse's 1975 victory in the L.K. Shapiro Stakes at Hollywood Park was part of an unfortunate event. After watching their horse win and celebrating briefly, they returned to their hotel and found their room already occupied by two men wearing stocking masks and carrying guns. The couple was robbed of Pat's jewelry and their cash, including Dick's winnings from betting on HA's Pet. They were tied up and left in their room, but otherwise unharmed.
A visitation with the family is scheduled for Friday, March 7, at 6 pm at George H. Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Dr., Houston. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 8, in the chapel of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street, Houston.
