Three-year-old filly pacer Paula's Best broke the Vernon Downs track record Tuesday night when she captured the opening division of the $156,556 New York Sire Stakes in 1:51.2.
Competing in the second race, Paulas Best idled in sixth off the starting gate, advanced to fourth at the half, reached in :54.3, then turned on the afterburners. The bay daughter of Pro Bono Best flashed into the lead before the third split--timed in 1:22.3--and sped on to a solid 1:51.2 triumph that chopped a full second off Vernon's previous standard for 3-year-old pacing fillies.
Tuesday's explosive performance surprised driver Eric Goodell, who did the steering for trainer Ross Croghan. "I didn't expect her to be that sharp tonight," said the blue-and-white clad reinsman. "She's had some health issues and hasn't been living up to her potential of late, but she was more like herself this evening. She got over this track easily and came a strong last three-eighths of the mile. I was very impressed." The three-length victory over The Isle Of Pan was the third score, coupled with a pair of second-place showings, in five current outings for the career winner of $261,594, who is owned by Lawrence Roman. Her personal best performance bettered the previous Downs mark for this class, which was set by Cammies Lady on July 9, 1993. Tuesday's other NYSS divisional winners, all earning fresh win marks, were JK Let It Ride, in 1:52.1 for driver Stephane Bouchard, trainer Linda Toscano and the 3 Brothers Stables; Lislea Phia, in 1:52.2 for pilot Brian Cross, trainer Harry Harvey and owner Timothy Rooney, and Betting Machine, in 1:53.3 for catch-driver Dan Cappello, trainer George Teague Jr. and the Only Money Inc. and Teague Inc. ownership contingent.
