Paul Doherty, assistant trainer to Ray Schnittker and caretaker to 2008 Hambletonian winner Deweycheatumnhowe, died early Monday afternoon. He was 52. Mr. Doherty had been in critical condition and on a ventilator in recent days with a series of medical complications. Mr. Doherty’s wife, Roxanne, also works in racing and has been employed by the Meadowlands for many years. Mr. Doherty's brother, Jim, was elected to harness racing's Hall of Fame in Goshen, N.Y., in 2002. Another brother, Peter, died just last month. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be reported when known.
