Joe Pavia Jr., the leading driver at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, will be idle for approximately six weeks following an accident at the Meadowlands Saturday night. Pavia sustained a fractured arm after being catapulted into the air during the ninth race while driving Nic Nac Hanover in a New Jersey Sire Stakes. He also suffered a concussion as well as a rotator cuff injury, according to Pocono's publicity director John Zimich.
The accident occurred when Jim Meittinis’ horse, Beware Of Darkness, stumbled and fell to the ground at the beginning of the race, sending him onto the track. In turn, Greg Merton also was unseated and landed in the infield while driving TJ’s Ideal.
Pavia Jr. landed several feet away from Merton and was transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment. Merton, who also drives at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, and Meittinis sustained only bruises and were cleared to resume their driving duties.
All three horses also escaped serious injuries. (Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs)
