July 18, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Association is now accepting applications for the 2008 James Manderino Scholarship, which is open to children of owners, trainers or drivers who have participated in harness racing within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on a regular basis for at least the previous two years. Children of deceased members are also eligible. The deadline for applications is Oct. 15.

Candidates must be seniors at any public or private secondary school or graduates who have taken their SAT or ACT test and are recommendable to a college by the learning institution they are currently enrolled in or graduated from.

Winners will be determined based on academic performance combined and financial need as well as the extent of their community service and leadership. Applicants are encouraged to submit character references and letters of recommendation. Enrollment in a curriculum related to the harness racing industry will receive special consideration.

A copy of the application and complete details may be downloaded by visiting www.pahha.comand clicking on the “James Manderino Scholarship Fund 2008” link, or by contacting PHHA headquarters or your nearest field office.

The James Manderino Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1993. To date, recipients have received approximately $40,000 in tuition assistance. The amount of the individual awards and number of recipients is determined yearly based on the number of qualified applicants and available funds, but the minimum award is $1,000 per winning student.
