Peter Doherty, 55, dies in New Jersey

Peter A. Doherty, 55, of Clifton, N.J., a hroseman and the brother of Hall of Famer Jim Doherty, died after a short illness on June 10.

Mr. Doherty was born Dec. 15, 1953 in Saint John, New Brunswick, the son of the late J. Frank and Mary (Clancy) Doherty. He was a graduate of Saint Malachy’s Memorial High School in Saint John and attended Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

He was a member of the USTA as well as the New Jersey SBOA. He moved from Canada to New England, where he began his career as a horseman, working with his brother, Jim. He spent some time in Maryland, racing at Rosecroft Raceway, and then moved to New Jersey to return to work with his brother at the Meadowlands Racetrack, while returning to New England a few months every year.

He is survived by his son, Andrew; brothers, Jim (Marianne), William (Rita) and Paul (Roxanne); sisters, Mary (Bill) Murphy, Martina (Donald) Shannon, Patricia (Merrill) Loughery, Anne (Paul) Gilbride and Evelyn; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and his former wife, Maureen (nee Feely).
