It may have been one of the slowest victories of Peter Wrenn's driving career, but the 2:04.4 victory by Specialty Training in an elimination of the Spartan Futurity for 2-year-old colt trotters at the fairgrounds in Midland, Mich. on Sunday was the 46 year old's 8,000th career victory. Wrenn, who became just the 16th driver to reach 8,000 victories, came back later to notch win 8,001, also with Specialty Training, who won the Spartan Futurity final with a 2:04.2 effort.
A native Michigander, Wrenn has been based in Indiana this year, earlier capturing the driving title at Hoosier Park and currently leading the standings at Indiana Downs. Overall, he ranks seventh on the national dash list with 354 victories, with purse earnings of more than $2.3 million.
Wrenn had 10 drives at Midland on Sunday, adding four seconds and four thirds to go with his pair of victories. He got away sixth, more than 14 lengths back at the opening quarter with Specialty Training in the elimination, before rolling on to a three-length score. Wrenn got away second, five lengths behind in the early going, in the final before going on to win by 3 1/2 lengths.
