Phyllis Brickel, mother of noted racing official Herman J. Brickel, died on Sunday at Along with her late husband Herman R. Brickel, Mrs. Brickel bred and raised many outstanding horses including Billy Dart, the 1982 Jug Preview winner, and Ami Song, the dam of the top trotter and sire Songcan. The Brickels stood the Volomite stallion Peter Lind and owned the mare Princess Chief. Together they produced such standout pacers as former world champion Victory
One of Princess Chief’s daughters that the Brickels bred and raised was Princess Best, the second dam of the champion racehorse and sire Abercrombie. Another granddaughter of Princess Chief was Silent Katy, the dam of the Woodrow Wilson winner Carls Bird p, 2, 1:55.3 ($1.1 million).
Herman J. Brickel, a longtime racing secretary who is now retired, said, “My mother and father were farmers who bred and raised horses. A lot of good horses came off their land.”
