Ilaria Jet, a 3-year-old Italian-bred filly by Pine Chip out of the Baltic Speed mare Toby's Taxi, won the rich Premio Nazional at the San Siro track in Milan on Thursday night, beating the boys with a quick burst of speed in the final furlong.
Finally the tactic worked out ok for the great filly and 2006 European recordholder for 2-year-old fillies. She can beat the colts, but she need the trip and she got the pocket in the Classic Nazionale.
Ismos FP was the early leader, but Ilaria Jet's driver, Roberto Andreghetti, got out of the pocket with 5/16ths mile left and was able to follow Ideale Luis as they turned for home. There is no one with a faster brush than Ilaria Jet, who finally won by three lengths. She was timed in a mile rate of 1:58.2 over 2,100 meters.
Idalgo Jet (Supergill) made a bold backstretch and threewide last turn but tired as a matter of fact to third.
Last year Ilaria Jet set a European record for 2-year-old fillies. This year her talent is well known, but she had never before taken on the males until Thursday night's Nazionale.
Roberto Toniatti bred Ilaria Jet.
