The Blooded Horse Sale concluded its Winter Speed Sale Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Ohio. A total of 559 horses were sold, generating a gross of $1.7 million for an average price of $3,061.

The sale topper was hip number 489, the 10-year-old broodmare Lady Stormont, and her young son by Deweycheatumnhowe, who was by her side. She had delivered the colt on Jan. 28 at Walnut Hall Ltd. in Lexington, KY.  The mare's breeder, Eric Baker of Long Sault, Ont., bought the daughter of Pine Chip and her foal for $80,000.  Lady Stormont is a half sister to Lord Stormont 3, 1:53.2 ($901,504).

Walnut Hall Ltd. and Hanover Shoe Farms sold a large number of horses at this year’s Blooded Horse Winter Speed Sale.  Walnut Hall Ltd. sold 48 horses for a gross of $621,900 and an average of $12,956; Hanover’s 56 horses grossed $133,500 for an average price of $2,384.

Walnut Hall Ltd.’s offering included well-bred trotting broodmares—either in foal or, in the case of four, with foals at their side--and many of them went to buyers from Indiana, where expanded gaming has improved purses and the breeding incentive program. In addition, Swedish horseman John Erik Magnusson, who has a farm near Lexington, Ky., bought eight horses from Walnut Hall Ltd. His highest priced acquisition was Enchanting Lady, a daughter of Angus Hall, and her Deweycheatumnhowe colt who was born Jan. 6. Magnusson bought the mare and her foal for $40,000.

Walnut Hall Ltd. sold Kidman Hall, a half sister to its late foundation mare Amour Angus, to Pennsylvania breeder John Hurtgen for $55,000. She was sold in foal to Deweycheatumnhowe.

Pacing broodmares, even those offered by Hanover Shoe Farms, were sold for more modest prices. Raptture Hanover, a 15-year-old mare by Matt’s Scooter, was sold in foal to Badlands Hanover for just $5,500. Doyle Air Cargo of Ontario bought the mare. She has already produced Rap Star Hanover p, 1:52.2 ($123,028).

Volunteer Hanover, a 13-year-old daughter of Artsplace, was sold in foal to Badlands Hanover for $5,200. Wisconsin breeders Kenneth and Jane Rucker signed the sales slip.
