California-based Standardbred owner and Cal Expo TV commentator Gregg Pistochini was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy, grand theft and burglary for allegedly selling stolen golf balls on eBay. He was released on $10,000 bail.
Pistochini, 41, who has owned several well-known horses, including world champion Eaton Road Kill, was arrested by the Placer County Sheriff's Department after allegedly making a transaction to an undercover officer. According to a story published in Thursday's Sacramento Bee and a release issued by the sheriff's department, the golf ball scheme was discovered after security at a Target store in Sacramento detained an alleged accomplice of Pistochini for allegedly shoplifting.
According to the story, the accomplice would shoplift cases of Callaway golf balls and then sell them to Pistochini, who in turn would sell them on eBay. "(Pistochini) paid (the accomplice) $15 for a box of one dozen balls and then put the box up for sale on eBay at $25 per box," said a sergeant for the sheriff's department, who added that Pistochini sold about $9,700 worth of golf balls on eBay at the discounted price.
