Pocono slots on horizon

November 02, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs is on target to open its $70 million temporary slot machine parlor on Tuesday, Nov. 14. According to reports, racetrack workers are currently installing the last of the 1,083 slot machines, with several last-minute checks also being done.

The slot area will be open 24 hours a day, but current Pennsylvania law precludes the selling of alcohol except for between the hours of 7 a.m. and 2 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and beginning at 11 a.m. on Sundays.

The track has hired about 400 people to work in the slot area. The permanent casino is scheduled to open sometime in 2008.

The Pocono slot area will actually open for a pre-test on Nov. 10 and again on Nov. 12, with profits going to benefit the United Way of Wyoming Valley. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board regulations require that at least as many people as machines attend the first test and another 50 percent more for the second. Then the public will be allowed in at 10 a.m. on Nov. 14.
