The front-page headline in the Monday edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader says Kentucky voters now support the expansion of gambling in the state, and say adding electronic slot machines at the state's racetracks is the best way for the state to raise money.
The poll was a telephone survey of 600 "likely" voters by Research 2000 of Olney, Md., from May 2 to 4. The poll was commissioned by the Lexington Herald-Leader, WKYT-TV (the CBS affiliate in Lexington), and WAVE-TV in Louisville.
Kentucky legislators, particularly the influential Repulican legislative leader David Williams, have kept any slots-at the-tracks initiatives from moving forward in the legislator even though Gov. Steve Beshear has proposed expanding gambling at racetracks to raise money to balance the state's budget.
