Polly Sidley,a longtime horse owner who likes working with the foals and mares at the family farm in Painesville, Ohio, is the 2009 Lady Pace honoree at the Delaware, Ohio, County Fair. She will be honored in winner’s circle ceremonies following an Ohio Breeders Championship Jug Day afternoon.
Polly and her husband Bob have owned Northern Farms in northeastern Ohio since the early 1960s.
"We work about half a day with the horses at the farm," said Mrs. Sidley. "This time of year (midsummer) we spend a lot of time with the babies trying to get halters on them and making them unafraid of us. We have 10 weanlings and 13 mares and two more mares may be in foal. I love to feed and work with the horses; it is a lot of fun.”
The Sidleys race most of their homebreds. “Our creed is we race what we breed,” said Bob. “We live here on the farm and there is a big barn behind the house. My wife runs the farm and does the books. She is the unbridled strength of our operation.”
The Sidleys met while Polly was attending Lake Erie Women’s College in Painesville and were married in 1958 and have two sons, Robert and Marshall. Polly does not jog any of her horses because of a back injury suffered while riding in college.
“An anxious time is when one of our babies makes their first start," added Mrs. Sidley. "If he or she wins, that is really great. It is like having a new crop of kids every year. Watching them develop. Each one has his own personality. You hope they make it to the sires stakes. We follow the Ohio fair circuit. Mike Meadors is our trainer.”
Delaware is a special stop for Polly and her stable. “This is big time for us. The big crowds and everything.”
The Sidleys have enjoyed some exciting times at Delaware with such stakes winners as Dix Tomboy, Prize Penney, Sid’s Time and Hay Greyday. (Little Brown Jug)
