Veteran Pompano Park-based horseman Bob Arnold, less than one week away from turning 57 on Aug. 2, is currently awaiting a kidney transplant, with his story told Tuesday on SunSentinel.com. Arnold, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 19 and twice has undergone double bypass open-heart surgery, also received a kidney from his wife, Rene, in 1996.
Arnold, who has been undergoing dialysis treatment three times per week, last won a race at Pompano Park on Dec. 28, 2009, directing 35-1 longshot Elisabeth Ann Can to a career-best 1:58.4 victory.
"The tote board goes up to 99-1," Pompano’s John Berry told the Sun Sentinel. “Bob has faced odds of a million-to-one in life. He's conquered that and will continue to conquer that." To read the SunSentinel.com story, click here.
