Pompano open for s'casting

After being closed for nearly one month due to damage from Hurricane Wilma, Pompano Park will open some of its doors for simulcasting on Thursday.

"Patrons will be able to watch and wager on a total of 18 different signals Thursday starting at 12:30 p.m.," said track general manager Dick Feinberg. "We will have part of the second floor open and all of the third floor for simulcasting every day. It will be great to have customers back in the building."

Another surprise took place in the make shift race office Wednesday morning as 299 horses were entered for the non-wagering matinee races schedule for Saturday. With so many horses entered, part of the race program will also be raced on Monday. The public is invited, free of charge, to attend the races both days.

There are a total of 34 races programmed, all competing for purses, plus four qualifying races for horses not yet eligible to compete in a purse race. On Saturday the four qualifying races will takes place at 10 a.m. with 20 of the matinee races starting at 11 a.m. On Monday, the remaining 14 races will start at 11 a.m.

Because most of these horses have not competed in a month, the regular race conditions were pushed aside for the matinee races in favor of the old ABC classification.

"It's a lot of races but it's also great that so many horses are ready to race." Feinberg said. "It shows that when we are ready to open in December we can pick up where we left off and get ready for a strong winter meet."

Work continues at the track for the tentative Dec. 2 reopening for live racing.
