Ponder misses Molson

Rob Roy Mattgregor and Our Lucky Killean captured their respective Molson Pace eliminations at London's Western Fair Raceway Friday and in doing so punched their tickets to next week's rich final. Defending race champion Ponder was late in arriving at the track for his Lasix administration due to a traffic tie up and that forced the O.R.C. judges to scratch the Bob McIntosh trainee.

Rob Roy Mattgregor, in rein to Ron Pierce, equaled Western Fair Raceway's all-age track record of 1:53 thanks to his 9-1 upset in the $18,000 ( C ) first elimination.

Pronger, in rein to John Kovacs, hung up blistering early fractions of :26.4 and :55.2 before giving up the lead to Dr No halfway up the backstretch. Dr No wheeled the field past the three-quarter pole in 1:23.3 before being overtaken by Rob Roy Mattgregor, who tracked Dr No until the head of the lane.

Rob Roy Mattgregor kicked out a final quarter in :29.1 en route to the 1 3/4-length decision over Buckeye One, who rallied for the runner-up spot, while Dr No and Lincoln Parke took home third and fourth place finishes respectively.

Post time favourite, Lis Mara, made a break in the first turn for driver Keith Oliver and finished seventh.

It was just the second win of the season for Rob Roy Mattgregor, who boosted his lifetime earnings to $383,609 ( C ) for trainer Mickey Burke. The 6-year-old son of Matts Scooter–Cheer Me Up is owned by the Darbys Edge Stable of London, OH, and Joseph Di Scala of Katonah, NY.

Our Lucky Killean was a narrow winner in the second elimination after enduring a tough first-over trip for driver Jack Moiseyev.

Must Be Matt, in rein to Pierce, put up the opening quarter in :27.1 before giving up the top spot to Tigerama and Mark MacDonald shortly after the opening stanza. Tigerama had the field down the half in :56.1 and he battled with Our Lucky Killean to the third station in 1:24.2.

Our Lucky Killean managed to edge past the pacesetter in the lane for the three-quarter-length decision in 1:54. Must Be Matt rallied to grab the place position while Tigerama and Astronomical finished third and fourth respectively.

Our Lucky Killean improved his record to 4-2-1 in 15 starts this season for Casie Coleman, who conditions the 5-year-old son of Camluck–Our Emblem for Mac Nichol of St. Albert, AB.

The $9,000 payday boosted Our Lucky Killean's career bankroll to $641,475.
