April 30, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Ponder knocked one-fifth of a second off the Hazel Park all-age track record Saturday night, winning the Invitational Pace in 1:51. The previous mark of 1:51.1 was held jointly by Final Cheers, who established the record in 2000, and Rainbow Blue, who tied it in 2004.

Peter Wrenn was in the bike as Ponder sat third through the :26.3 opening quarter, then swooped into the lead and cut fractions of :54.2 and 1:22.1. With a :28.4 final quarter Ponder romped home for a 10 3/4-length victory over Meal Ticket, with Itchy third.

The race was the first of the year for the 6-year-old stallion by The Ponderosa. Bob McIntosh trains and is a co-owner with John Fielding and the CSX Stable. With the victory Ponder’s lifetime earnings stand at $850,045.
