Poof She’s Gone, a recent winner of the $525,800 Merrie Annabelle final at the Meadowlands, easily captured the fastest of three $40,000(C) Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Series eliminations for rookie filly trotters on Monday night at Mohawk, with a 1:56.2 victory for driver David Miller.
Also posting wins in their respective eliminations were Angostura, for driver Trevor Ritchie, and Emmylou Who, for driver Lyle MacArthur, both in identical clockings of 1:58.
Poof She’s Gone sat fourth throughout the opening half of the first split before making her move in the third quarter. The daughter of Kadabra-Travelin Superlite wore down the tempo-setting Random Destiny, and then drew off under no urging for the dominant win.
Random Destiny was able to hold the place spot, with Isthatallyagot surviving a tight photo to finish, third. The winner returned just $2.70 for the win.
“I was able to sit until past the half, and she was able to take it first up,” driver Miller said. “She did that fairly easy. I was hoping to get the job done without racing her awful hard, and it worked out. I’ve liked her right along. She’s been good to me all along. She has the Champlain and then the Peaceful Way after that.”
The win was the third in four tries this season for the Richard Norman trainee, who is owned by Mel Hartman and John Fielding of Ontario and Herb Liverman of Florida and David McDuffee of New Hampshire.
In the second elimination, Angostura was able to weave her way through traffic in the late stages to prevail for the second straight time to start her career. The daughter of Angus Hall-Peluso won handily over Windcross, with Oaklea Samantha rounding-out the top three.
The Dan Creighton trainee returned $5.10 as the second choice in the wagering for the Danterra Racing Stable of Strathroy, Ont. Her first start was a 9 1/4-length win in an Ontario Sire Stakes Grassroots events at Hiawatha Horse Park in Sarnia.
The final elimination produced the closest finish, with Emmylou Who surviving a close three-way photo to upset at odds of 11-1. The daughter of Ken Warkentin-Emerald Seelster got the better of Scottish Starlet, with Ruling Class finishing third.
It was the second win in four outings for the filly trained by Lyle MacArthur for owners Linda Wellwood, Tammy Aspden, Anne Shunock and Diane Ingham. She returned $25.40 to win.
The $130,000(C) Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Series final will go postward next Monday night at Mohawk. The field, in post position order will be composed of Windcross, Warrawee Lassie, Random Destiny, Oaklea Destiny, Emmylou Who, Poof She’s Gone, Ruling Class, Isthatallyagot, Scottish Starlet and Angostura.
