Two-time Kentucky Sire Stakes champion Prayer I Am gave Lexington-based trainer Kevin Thomas an 83-1 upset victory in the $160,000 Allerage Farms Open Trot Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile. Driver David Miller sat patiently on the inside until deep stretch when he tipped his charge to the outside and on to the 1:51.4 victory.
Leaving from post one, Miller sat third on the pylons down the backside as the leading Enough Talk and driver Ron Pierce found themselves in a battle with the first-over Corleone Kosmos, driven by John Campbell. After a :54.4 half and then approaching the 1:24.2 three quarters, Corleone Kosmos began to tire as Roger Hammer tipped Vivid Photo three wide.
Meanwhile, Miller was biding his time and the opportunity to angle out came in deep stretch. He was able to rally Prayer I Am past Enough Talk and then had enough to hold off the late charge of Arch Madness and Brian Sears to the wire. This was the last start of the year for Arch Madness, who could be headed for a European campaign early next year.
For Prayer I Am, the win was the 4-year-old son of Like A Prayer's third of the year in 13 starts, sending his earnings to $122,150. Overall, Prayer I Am has career earnings now of $687,762, with his Allerage clocking a career best. He is owned by Roy Dobbins of Bryant, Alabama.
