Primo Spur trotted in 1:56.4 to win the fastest of three Ohio Breeders Championship divisions for 3-year-old male trotters Wednesday at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds. Driven by trainer Richard Stillings, Primo Spur rebounded from a break in his last start in the $100,000 Ohio Sire Stakes final to take first money in the $19,435, edging past One Sharp Spur and Ed Greeno in deep stretch.
A son of Pegasus Spur, Primo Spur is owned by Roy Davis. The win, a career-best clocking, was his fifth in 11 starts this year.
Heza Challenger won the second split in 1:57.3 for trainer-driver Sam "Chip" Noble III. The gelded son of Chip Chip Hooray scored for the sixth time in 10 starts this year as he moved from mid pack early to the lead shortly past the half. From there he led the rest of the route, with Northmedo Hoo-Ray picking up runner-up honors.
Robert Kauffman owns the winner, who increased his career earnings to more than $65,000.
Trottin Troy and Looks Dignified battled side by side from the half but it was Trottin Troy who finally wore down the stubborn pacesetter on the inside to gain the win in the opening division. Trottin Troy was clocked in 1:59.1 as he scored for the fourth time this year in a dozen attempts.
David Miller drove the winner for trainer Jim Arledge Jr. and owner Jean McKee. The gelded son of Chip Chip Hooray was coming off a 12-1 upset win in the $100,000 Ohio Sire Stakes final at Northfield Park Sept. 1.
