Pujols lowers mark to 1:52.2

July 21, 2005 | Print View

Two-year-old colt pacer Pujols, named for St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, lowered his own Hawthorne Racecourse track record Wednesday night to 1:52.2 with a victory in a $5,200 conditioned event.

With trainer-driver Tom Harmer, Pujols was sent to the lead just past the quarter and led the rest of the route to best his previous mark by 1 1/5 seconds. The time equaled the national season's mark for his division, set by Artstanding in last week's New Jersey Sire Stakes final at the Meadowlands.

A son of Cole Muffler, Pujols was recently purchased by New York owner Michael Polansky and moved into the Harmer barn. He has three wins and a second in four starts, with earnings of $6,725.
