In Florida, horsemen racing at Pompano Park have seen a recent “bump” in purses with races like the Open Pace for Fillies and Mares as well as the Open Pace and Open Trot all up from $13,000 to $20,000 at the end of January. “I wouldn’t call it a purse increase,” said Greg DeFrank, Pompano’s race secretary. “But there will probably be another one in a couple of weeks. Our fiscal year ends in April, but our meet ends in May. So I have a budget I have to meet in April. We have these double-header programs and all that. We’ll be about two-thirds of the way through that in about another week or two. Plus a lot people are getting ready to leave and go up north. I’m going to try and do a little something for the guys that stay. DeFrank said that the purse bump is something he does periodically throughout the meet. “Sometimes if a race goes for $6,000, I’ll bump it up to $6,500, but I would call it more of an adjustment than anything else.”
Another "bump" also appears on the condition sheet for the first weekend card in February at Pompano. The Filly and Mare Open Pace carries a purse of $30,000 for Friday, Feb. 5 as does the Open Trot carded for the next night . The FFA Open Invitational Pace, also on Saturday, carries a purse of $50,000.
