Rabies case at Northville

Return Home
February 08, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Best Penny, a 5-year-old daughter of Cambest out of the mare Penny Rich, has been euthanized after being diagnosed with rabies at Northville Downs. Animal health surveillance detected the horse exhibiting symptoms of the illness at the suburban Detroit racetrack on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

State veterinarian Dr. Steven Halstead, in cooperation with Michigan racing commissioner Christine White, has since strongly recommended any horse stabled at Northville Downs in the past three weeks be vaccinated against rabies.

Best Penny last raced on Jan. 19 at Northville, winning an $8,400 conditioned pace in 1:58.3. Trained by Brian Cox and owned by Rick Noel, Best Penny was bred by Ada Jean Ackerman, and was raced early on by Doug and D.R. Ackerman before being sold to Noel in late 2005. She started in the Courageous Lady that year at Northfield Park and also finished second in the Kentucky Sire Stakes final at The Red Mile.

Best Penny had a career record of 51-12-7-6 and $93,063 in earnings. She took her mark of 1:53.2 at Indiana Downs in 2006.
