Falls For You won the $377,000 Kentucky Filly Futurity race-off Friday afternoon at The Red Mile in essentially a walkover as Flash Lightning made a break shortly after the start of the two-horse race-off. With Brian Sears in the sulky, Falls For You coasted through fractions of :28.3, :57.2 and 1:28 before crossing the wire under wraps in 1:58, taking home the entire purse of $75,400 reserved for the race.
Both Sears and driver Ron Pierce, behind Flash Lightning, appeared to not really want to fire off the gate, but when Flash Lightning made the break the final outcome was decided. Flash Lightning had also made a break in the second elimination that took her out of contention, a bobble that driver Ron Pierce said afterward came "when she got mad when I tried to straighten her in the first turn."
The race-off was scheduled to be a three-horse match-up but trainer Bob McIntosh scratched Vulcanize rather than return her for a third heat on an extremely sultry afternoon in Lexington. The match race between Falls For You and Flash Lightning was delayed a few minutes as the horess continued to cool off under the muggy conditions after the second heat.
This was the second Filly Futurity winner for trainer Trond Smedshammer, who conditioned the 2004 champion Housethatruthbuilt. Falls For You, a daughter of Yankee Glide out of the Balanced Image mare Armbro Niagra, now has a 2007 ledger of 14-7-1-2 and earnings of $421,934 for Atlantic Trot, Fair Winds Farm, Ted Gewertz and Willow Pond.
